The Allgood Community was formerly called Chepultepec. The name Chepultepec came from a group of young men who volunteered and fought in the war of 1846. When they returned home, the hills overlooking the crossroads reminded them of the citadel of Chapultepec, Mexico. However, in petitioning the Post Office Department to establish a post office, the name was misspelled and the name Chepultepec was given. According to the records of the Post Office Department in Washington, D.C., a post office was established at Chepultepec, Alabama, on July 3, 1848. It was discontinued and reestablished several times over the next 67 years. That is until a local business owner who was having trouble receiving orders because his customers could not spell or remember the name Chepultepec asked Dr. William B. Allgood who was also the local Postmaster, to send a request to the Post Office Department and ask for the name to be changed to “Allgood Post Office” in honor of the good doctor. On December 3, 1915 the name was formally changed. Allgood was incorporated as a Township in the State of Alabama in 1959. An inclusive water system was also established in 1959 to supply the Townspeople with drinking water. In 1974 a much needed 35,000-gallon water storage tank was flown into place by helicopter. This tank was placed at a high elevation helping to support the demand for supply and water line pressure of the growing population. In 2006 and again in 2009 the Town received State grants which helped to overhaul the water system including the installation of new water lines, pipes, and meters, cut off valves and to build a new 150,000-gallon water storage tank. In 2020 the Town once again upgraded the water system to include auto read meters.
This region, located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, was first inhabited by Indians. By the middle 1800’s settlers who were given homestead grants by the Federal Government began to move into the area. These settlers came from South Carolina, Georgia and many other states. The settlers were to live on these forty-acre tracts and make improvements to the land before they would be given the deed. Many settlers had trades which included: cooper (barrel maker), tannery (leather maker), saddle maker, furniture maker, grist mill, blacksmiths, mercantile stores, lime company and a drugstore which was located in the post office. A spur track was built from the L&N Railroad to the lime plant so the lime could be shipped to other countries. The area also featured a large L&N Depot Station which furnished transportation for products produced in the area; cross ties, cotton, cream, eggs, lime, cement, fertilizer and all types of farm products. Sadly, the train tracks and station no longer exist.
There are also several cemeteries and churches established in the Allgood Community. Once called “Old Camp Ground” by people traveling North to South and by Soldiers of the Civil War who camped there, the cemetery now known as Shiloh is the final resting place for many. The oldest grave dates to 1843 and also hosts many confederate tombs. This area was used as a camping stop over for confederate soldiers from 1860 through 1865. The Primitive Baptist Church was also located near the Shiloh cemetery and in later years reorganized as Missionary Baptist. They are joined by the Methodist & Presbyterian congregations; each denomination hosts beautiful and community-built houses of worship. The former Presbyterian church building now houses Allgood Town Hall. The first school was also established in 1880 and boasted two teachers. A new school was built in 1900 but burned in 1959. A new block building school was opened in 1960. At the beginning of the 1975-76 school year, the Allgood and Remlap schools were consolidated and the new school is known as Southeastern Elementary. However, the school is no longer located in the Town of Allgood. In 1923 Alabama Power Company started serving Allgood with electricity. These was some of the first rural lines in the county to find out how power would serve rural people. Natural gas lines were installed in 1955. On October 1, 1966 the new Highway 75 was opened to the public. If you ever visit the Town of Allgood you will notice that the Fire Department and a few of the local businesses are located on a spur of property between both Old and New Highways 75. We are a small community filled with history and nostalgia.
